Broderick Steven Harvey, better known as just Steve Harvey, is an African American Actor, Television and Radio Presenter, Author, Businessman, and former Stand-up Comedian from West Virginia.

He began his career as a Stand-up Comedian in the 80’s on his show titled The Steve Harvey Show. As a result of his successful ventures from 1985 to the present day, he became an award winner of several awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award six times, a Marconi Award two times, and an NAACP Image Award 14 times in several categories.

Steve Harvey is identified by his bold head, full dark mustache, bright smile, and witty personality. Let’s take a look at Steve Harvey when he was younger and where is he now.

Although Steve Harvey was born in West Virginia, his family had moved to Cleveland, Ohio. They lived on East 112 Street, which was later renamed after Steve himself, as Steve Harvey Way. It was there he attended Glenville High School in 1974. After graduating High School, he then attended college at Kent State University and West Virginia University, where he was a part of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Before Steve got into comedy, he took up several jobs as a boxer, an autoworker, an insurance salesman, a carpet cleaner, and a mailman. He didn’t always receive comedy gigs, which made his lifestyle a bit of a struggle. After divorcing his first wife and losing out on job opportunities, Steve became homeless, having to sleep in his car and shower in hotel bathrooms, public pool bathrooms, and gas station restrooms.

In the 1990s, Steve became a finalist in the second annual Johnny Walker National Comedy Search, which led to him becoming the Host on the television program Showtime At The Apollo, filmed at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York. The show ran, with him remaining the Host, from 1993 to 2018.

Steve began growing in his success as a stand-up comedian, which, upon starring in Me And The Boys on ABC, led to him starring in his show titled The Steve Harvey Show, an American sitcom that became fairly popular among the African American community. The show ran from 1996 to 2002, becoming the place where Steve felt to be in the prime of his comedy career.

In 1997, Steve was included in the largest grossing comedy tour in history, the Kings Of Comedy Tour, with other comedians Cedric The Entertainer, D.L Hughley, and Bernie Mac. This was considered a hugely impactful moment in Steve’s career. The tour was later adapted into a film by Spike Lee called The Original Kings Of Comedy and was also used as the title of Steve’s comedy show which was then renamed Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge.

This year he also began hosting his weekly radio show titled The Steve Harvey Morning Show. At this time, Steve Harvey’s Big Time Challenge still aired on television. The radio program ran from September 2000 to May 2005 and was indicated through the United States.

Steve’s acting career began to lift off as he obtained several roles in several films from 2003 to 2005. He made appearances in the movie The Fighting Temptations alongside Cuba Gooding Jr, Love Don’t Cost A Thing as the role of Clarence Johnson, Johnson Family Vacation, and You Got Served. In the year 2005, he co-starred in the movie Racing Stripes voicing the character Buzz.

He released his stand-up comedy special Don’t Trip He Ain’t Done Through With Me Yet. He performed this special during Megafest sharing his views on children, church, African-American culture, and family with a lack of profanity, something that portrays his authentic character but not everyone may enjoy.

During the interview, he stated to black men that they “Can be 50 and fly.” sharing his wisdom and showcasing his talent for motivational speaking. This same year he hosted the Disney Dreams Academy, an event that focuses on the personal and professional growth of teens. The event was held from January 17th to 20th at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Following the year of hosting the Disney Dreams Academy, Steve published his world-famous book titled Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, which talks about the way men look at women and relationships. The book was then used as inspiration for a movie adaptation in 2012 titled Think Like A Man. The characters in the romantic comedy were living their lives based on the advice they took from the actual book.

Before his marriage with his current wife, Marjorie, Steve was married two times, first to Marcia and then to Mary. He divorced Marcia in 1994 and two years later had gotten married to Mary, whom he also divorced in 2005. Mary didn’t take their split well and conjured a lawsuit against Steve for several claims that have been issued illegitimate. Steve moved on from the allegations and married Marjorie in 2007. The two remain married and happily in love to this very day.

In 2010, Steve became the new host for the television game show Family Feud. His large and witty personality has labeled him the best host for the show has ever had. He also hosts Celebrity Family Feud, a segment of the show where celebrities compete against each other for a chance to donate $25,000 to a charity of their choice. The show airs on the ABC channel.

BET held their Celebration Of Gospel in 2012, where Steve Harvey attended and performed. This year was also the year he commemorated the end of his 27-year career as a Stand-up Comedian. His final act was performed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and was broadcast live. Steve stated, and I quote, ” The road to this final show has been an amazing journey, doing stand-up for the past 27 years, and I can’t thank fans enough after reflecting on all those years on stage.”

In 2013 Steve appeared on the cover of yet another magazine, Savoy. He was also interviewed by People Magazine, where he shared his story of being homeless for three years. This year he was also the first double host to be nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for both Outstanding Talk Show Host and Outstanding Game Show Host. He was also gifted the honor of having a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Having gained fame for also being a motivational speaker, very knowledgeable on the topic of dating, Steve launched his dating site in 2014 called Delightful, which is a partnership venture with IAC, an American holding company that owns brands in media and the internet. Steve provides the site with articles and videos on the topic of dating, helping women become ‘more dateable.’

Getting past Steve Harvey young and entering later into his career brings us to a mistake that was made and globally shared while he hosted the Miss Universe 2015 event in Las Vegas. Upon reading the results for the winner, Harvey accidentally mentioned the wrong name. He announced the first runner-up Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutierrez), as the winner when it was actually Miss Philippines (Pia Wurtzbach). Although Steve issued an apology for his simple mistake, the internet had a field day making fun of him and creating memes about the incident. Miss Colombia even told Steve, “You need to learn to read.”

Following his mistake during the results of MIss Universe 2015, Steve went on to host Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines, where he apologized to the native people for his mistake. He also continued to host for Miss Universe 2017 in Las Vegas, Miss Universe 2018 in Thailand, and Miss Universe 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Steve had a dream of hosting the Honors for some time, so much so that his opening speech included him saying, “What took ya’ll so long to ask me to host the show?”. He was then invited to host the Honors again the following year.

The show went viral on social media as a virtual DJ battle between two artists facing off against each other. Steve Harvey hosted the episode titled The Isley Brothers vs. Earth Wind And Fire. Steve has also united all of his businesses under Steve Harvey Global (SHG), which owns the rights for international versions of Family Feud. An African version was released in 2020.
